What to do during a power cut
Simple, calm steps for the first hours without electricity.
First steps
Check whether neighbours are affected. If it's just you, check your fuse box.
Call 105 — the free UK power cut number — to report it and get updates.
Use torches or LED lanterns rather than candles.
Keep food safe
Keep fridge and freezer doors closed. A full freezer usually stays frozen for around 24–48 hours.
Eat chilled food first, then move to your no-cook cupboard supplies.
Stay warm and informed
Layer clothing and gather in one room.
Use a battery or wind-up radio for local updates. Keep your phone charged with a power bank.
Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
