How much emergency water to store

The 3-litre rule, and how to store bottled water sensibly.

The basic rule

UK government guidance suggests storing at least 3 litres of drinking water per person per day.

Add extra for basic washing and for pets.

Storing it

Sealed supermarket bottled water is the simplest option. Keep it cool, dark and away from chemicals.

Check best-before dates and rotate into everyday use.
